These forms include Tower Gravity Energy Storage (TGES), Mountain Gravity Energy Storage (MGES), Advanced Rail Energy Storage (ARES), and Shaft Gravity Energy Storage (SGES). The 25 MW/100 MWh EVx™ Gravity Energy Storage System (GESS) is a 4-hour duration project being built outside of Shanghai in Rudong, Jiangsu Province, China. The EVx™ is under construction directly adjacent to a wind farm and national grid.
However, gravity energy storage also has certain disadvantages. First, its energy density is low compared with CAES and LIBES and its energy storage capacity per unit mass is low.
